Summer Ceramics Courses 2018

All my classes are held in my fully equipped North London Studio (See map below)

This summer I will be running courses between Monday 23rd July and Tuesday 14th August. There will be a 4 week evening class on Tuesday evenings. These are open to anyone from beginners to experienced potters. There are also a three day and a five day block of throwing classes which are always popular. New for this summer I will have a large scale garden ceramics course. There will also be a one day raku firing day

Mon 23rd to 25th July Three day throwing course 10am to 4pm

Whether you are a beginner wanting to learn how to throw or you wish to improve your technique with three days of professional tuition I aim to inspire you make better pots. I will guide you through centring the clay and how to alter vessels to make a variety of shapes from basic cylinders to bowls and teapots. There will be an endless supply of clay to throw and you only need to pay for what you decide to keep. Expect lots of frustration fun and surprises. Tea and coffee always available and bring along packed lunch to keep you going. Bring along an apron and an old towel. Spaces are limited to six (now fully Booked) Cost £210 a deposit of £40 secures your space

Sat 4th Aug One day raku firing 10.30am to 4.30pm

This is an opportunity to bring along pieces you have prepared to have fired using the raku firing technique. Bisque fired work is glazed in low temperature glazes and quickly fired in a gas kiln. As the temperature inside increases the pots glow bright orange/yellow and you will begin to see the glazes melting. When the surface becomes smooth out the pots are drawn from the kiln and plunged in to sawdust. This gives the pots a crackled and lustrous appearance. We also will experiment with other effects using copper and horse hair. Spaces are limited to seven (spaces available) Cost £70 a deposit of £20 secures your space

24th July to 14th Aug Four Tuesday Evenings of Pottery 7pm to 10pm

This class is an ideal introduction to the techniques of pottery making. If you are more experienced you can improve your skills. Over the four sessions you will make a number of pieces, learn different techniques for building and try some different surface decorating ideas. There also will be a chance to have a go on the wheel. On the last night we will finish with a raku firing where you can have one piece each to put through this fast and exciting technique. Please note clay is charged by weight before firing and costs from £2.50 per kilo. Space limited to ten (spaces available) Cost £120 a deposit of £40 secures your space

Mon 6th Aug to Fri 10th Aug Five day throwing course 10am to 4pm

Five days of learning to improve your skills on the wheel. This intensive will also include using coloured slips to give surface decoration to your work. You will have plenty of time to practice and be given tips throughout to help you become a better thrower. You will be able to try out different clay and see which one you prefer. You only need to pay for what you decide to keep. This course is open to all levels Spaces are limited to six (spaces available) Cost £315 a deposit of £40 secures your space

Tue 31st July to Thu 2nd Aug Large Scale Garden Piece 10am to 4pm

This is a unique new course. A chance to build a large garden piece with expert guidance. Choose from a bird bath a giant plant pot or even a totem pole. We will look at your design ideas and use a building technique that will best be suited. Your forms can be embellished with sprig moulds that you can design and cast in plaster or you can texture with a variety of tools and objects from around the studio. You can use a choice of suitable clay and everything will be fired to a high temperature to make frost resistant. The cost of the clay including firing will be in addition to the course fee. Spaces are limited to six (spaces available) Cost £210 a deposit of £40 secures your space.

Weekend and Weekly Courses

Weekday Courses

My ongoing ceramics courses run for 12 weeks and are two hours long. These run by the term and are very popular. The classes are small and friendly limited to 11 participants so everyone gets a bit of individual attention. A wide range of glazes and clays are available. Cost is £195 for the term with clay sold separately by the bag including firing and glazing Times Monday Evenings 730pm to 930pm Tuesday Morning 930am to 1130am Tuesday Afternoon 1230pm to 230pm Tuesday Evening 730pm to 930pm Wednesday Evening 730pm to 930pm Thursday Evening 730pm to 930pm All Full at the moment Please note that when you sign up for the ongoing courses you are committing to be there for the term. Classes cannot be transferred to other days to make up for times when you cannot attend. I also cannot issue refunds once the course has started.

Weekend Course - Throwing

The throwing classes are open to all levels and are a great way to make big improvements on your wheel ability. There are six wheels so spaces are limited and plenty of individual attention is guaranteed. The classes run throughout the year usually once a month. Times are from 1030am to 430pm and cost is £70 for a one day course. There is a £2.50 per kg charge for pieces that you wish to keep and get fired.

Weekend Course - Raku Firing

The raku process is fast and exciting. There is something very satisfying about seeing the glazes melt and the kiln opening with glowing bright orange pots then covering with leaves and sawdust. In the raku day classes you bring your own pieces to be fired. Times 1030am to 430pm cost for the day £70. Limited to seven participants

Directions to Studio 104 Alexandra Rd N10 2EX

The studio is off the main roads in a residential area in Muswell Hill next to the golf course and near the North Circular. It takes about ten minutes from the nearest bus stop to walk here. If driving there are usually spaces across from the house. I request that if you can to park here. Please do not block the driveway. If coming for the first time you will find, to the right of the house a gate. Follow the path around to the rear of the house and you will find the studio.

From Highgate Station catch bus 134 or 43 to Muswell Hill and get off at Wilton Rd stop on Colney Hatch Lane. Cross at the zebra crossing and follow Sydney Rd all the way to Oak Avenue. Turn right on to Oak Avenue then turn left at the top on to Alexandra Rd. 104 is about 200m down on your left

From Bounds Green Station catch bus 102 or 299 to Muswell Hill getting off at St Andrews Church. Cross here and take Windermere Rd to the end and turn left on to Grosvenor Rd. At the top of the road there is a barrier to prevent cars passing. You can either turn right down Forest Walk taking the footpath leading you on to Alexandra Rd, or continue down Wetherill Rd and turn right on Sydney Rd. From here follow directions above

From North Circular take junction for B550 signed Muswell Hill. Go in direction of Muswell hill then take second turn on left Hampden Rd. Follow all the way to the end then take a left on to Sydney Rd. At the end of Sydney Rd take a right on to Alexandra Rd and 104 is 300m along on the right.
